This is a late Taisho Era (c. 1926) kyodai (vanity) tansu with a unique arrangement of five drawersand a swing open door area for storage of perfumes and various bottles (see picture 9).This tansu chest was used to storecombs, makeup as well as jewelry. It originally had a mirror resting on top.The mirror at some time in the past broke or dissappeared and the two holes that originally held the mirror (see picture5) have have been filled with macassar ebony making it in many ways a more unique and functionalpiece of furniture.

The face and top of this chest is made of an exotic macassar ebony wood with the remaining case work made of keyaki (zelkova) woodand the interiors are made of kiri (paulownia) wood. The construction of this chest is strengthened by wooden pins throughout. The hardware is allhand forgedcopper. Being made of an extra hard ebonyit remains overall invery fine condition with a warm patina that only nearly a century of loving use could give.

All drawers run smoothly and the door opens and closes with ease. Please enjoy viewing the enlarged photos of this chest before offerding. This chest measures 19" wide by 9 1/4" high by 10" deep (49 x 23 x25 cm). Very solidly built, a great piece of Japanese history; and makes a classic desk top organizer today.
