Japanese Vintage 3 Drawer Mulberry Burl Zenibako Chobako Money Box Tansu Chest For Sale
This is a late Taisho Era (c. 1926) CHOBAKO (document and money box) with a unique arrangement of three drawerswith a lower locking drawer (see pictures 5 & 6). This tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as documents. There is a Japanese company name inside of one of the drawers, so it is likely that it was once the storage for this companies money and valuable documents.
The face and of this chest is made of mulberry burl wood with the remaining case work made of keyaki (zelkova) woodand the interiors are made of kiri (paulownia) wood. The construction of this chest is strengthened by wooden pin and dovetailed corner work (see picture 11). The hardware is allhand forgedcopper.The two top hinges have interesting origami crane and pine design (Japanese symbols of strength and longevity). There is a slot on the back right side used to house a measuring devise (not included) (see last picture). This chest is all original and with exception to a few minor scuffsit isoverall invery fine all originalcondition with a warm patina that only nearly a century of loving use could give.
