Japanese Vintage 5 Drawer Lidded Tansu Haribako Sewing Box Burl Mulberry For Sale
This is a late Taisho Era (c. 1926) haribako (sewing box) with a unique arrangement of four drawersand an additionalfifth drawerlocated inthe flip top lidded top section. Thetoparea is divided into two sections with an additionalremoveable pin cushion box on the left (see picture 6).This tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding as well as money and valuables.
The face and top of this chest is made of mulberry burl wood with the remaining case work made of keyaki (zelkova) woodand the interiors are made of kiri (paulownia) wood. The construction of this chest is strengthened by dovetailed corner work (see last picture). The hardware is allhand forgedcopper.This chest is all original and overall inexcellent all originalcondition with a warm patina that only nearly a century of loving use could give.
All drawers run smoothly and the lidded top opens and closes with ease. Please enjoy viewing the enlarged photos of this chest before offerding. This chest measures 11 1/2" wide by 9 1/4" high by 7" deep (29 x 23 x 18 cm). Very solidly built, a great piece of Japanese history; and makes a classic desk top organizer today.
