Japanese Vintage 5 Drawer W/ Secret Tansu Haribako Sewing Box Burl Mulberry For Sale
This is a late Taisho Era (c. 1926) haribako (sewing box) with a unique arrangement of four drawersand an additionalhidden fifth drawerlocated behind theflip top lidded top section. Thefront shelf area is divided into two sections and is removable. Behind this is a secret drawer, opened by pulling it out using the finger hole. This type of tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding as well as money and valuables.
The box's face and topare made of burled Japanese mulberry wood with kiri (paulownia) wood interiors and zelkova (keyaki) case work. The hardware is all copper with an aged patina, and the hinges are etched with images of paper cranes and pine saplings.Cranes symbolize longevity in Japanese culture, and pine symbolizes strength.This chest is all original and overall in very fine condition with a very warm patina that only nearly a century of loving use could give.
All drawers run smoothly and the lidded top opens and closes with ease. Please enjoy viewing the enlarged photos of this chest before offerding.
