Japanese Vintage 6 Drawer Lidded Tansu Haribako Sewing Box Macassar Ebony Wood For Sale
This is a late Taisho Era (c. 1926) haribako (sewing box) with a unique arrangement of five drawersand an additionalfifth drawerlocated inthe flip top lidded top section. Thetoparea is divided into two sections with an additionallift up arm (see picture 11).This tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding as well as money and valuables.
The face and top of this chest is made of an exotic macassar ebony wood with the remaining case work made of keyaki (zelkova) woodand the interiors are made of kiri (paulownia) wood. The construction of this chest is strengthened by wooden pin and dovetailed corner work. The hardware is allhand forgedcopper.The top has an interesting double fold to provide access to the enlarged top cavity (see pictures 9 & 10). There is a slot on the back right side used to house a measuring devise (not included) (see picture 11). This chest is all original andbeing made of an extra hard ebonyit isoverall inexcellent all originalcondition with a warm patina that only nearly a century of loving use could give.
