Japanese Vintage 80 Year Old 2 Drawer Paulownia Wood Shamisen Tansu Chest:
This is a very specialized form of tansu or hako, chest was made and used about 80 years ago in the early Showa period (c. 1930) to house two shamisen. The shamisen is a Japanesestringed instrument that dates tothe 13th century.Made of thehardest and most exotic woods, they are very expensive and so this box was devised to safely store two such insturments. It is evenly two sided and could house one shamisen on either side. The pegs of the shamisen were hungon the outward reaching hooks on each side of the stand and the lower area housed the base of the shamisen within two lided areas (see pictures 3, 4 ,& 5).The lower box of this stand has a long narrow drawer which was used to store the various extra strings, plectrum and various shamisen needs. The entire box and stand are made of Japanese kiri (paulownia) wood. Thereare severalprotective coats of Japanese urushi (natural lacquer).
This chest has a 80+ year old warm aged patina, and, with the exception of some very minor signs of loving use is in very fine condition and should serve one well for another century of use.9 1/2 " wide by10 1/2" deep by 41" high (24 x27 x104 cm). A great piece of Japanese history and avery interesting and functional piece of furniture.
Note: the two shamisenshown in the first two pictures are not included in this listing but will be made available in a future listing.
