Japanese Vintage Carved Wooden Dragon Pearl Temple Bell Mokugyo:
This is amid ShowaEra (c. 1950)hand carved temple bell (or drum).It was used in ceremonies at a Buddhist temple to beat cadence to prayer. Itis shaped into a bell form withtwo scaled dragons both reaching for the pearl of wisdom in the center. It is all hand carved from Japanese paulownia wood. When beat with a striker on the enlarged section of the bell it makes a loud thump that is used to help keep tempo to the Buddhist prayers.
It has been kept stored away for over half a century and remains in excellent condition.It measures5" wide by5 1/2" high (12.5 x 14 cm).
