Thisisa very special Japanesethree drawer suzuribako (portable calligraphy tansu)made entirely of Japanesehinoki wood with kiri (paulownia) wood interiors.This chest shows a highdegree of Japanese craftsmanship in the construction,joined with hardened hinoki wood pegs(see picture 11) throughout. This chest was rescued from a 500 year old family warehouse just outside Kyoto and dates to the late Meiji Era (c. 1910).

Thehand forged copper on this chest also date itto thelate Meiji era. Allhinges,corner workand latches are allmade of forged copper with a century old patina. This chest was used to hold calligraphy and writing materials as well as money and valuables.The lidded topholds brushes and an ink stone (suzuri) seen in pictures, 6, & 7which are all included. The top lidded section has a removeable tray (see picture 7)with its originalcustom fitted suzuri (ink stone) and a special iron brush rack which can hold up to 5 brushes.

It has been well used yet well loved and aside from a few ink stains in the removeable top tray it remains invery fine original condition with a patina that only a century of appreciation could give it. The top carrying handle is still secure and provides a convenient way to transport this chest (see picture 1).The lided top opens with the push of the side buttom (see picture 3) andsnaps the top securly in place when the lid is lowered.

7 1/2"wideby8 1/2" high by 11 3/4"deep(19 x21.5 x29.5 cm). A very warm accentfor your home or office. Great to hold pens and paper as well as remote controls for the tv and stereo. Please enjoy the enlarged pictures to get a full appreciation of the finehinoki wood and its century old patina.
