Japanese Vintage Satsuma Imari Ceramic Dragon Buddhist Tea Pot Kwan Yin Vessel:
This is aSatsuma style ceramic tea pot with designs of a Japanese dragon, Kwan Yin, and Buddhist priests. The dragonwith raised white droplets as scales is coiled around the outside of the pot in heavy relief. His head forms the finial. This multi-color glazed ceramic pot dates to the early Showa Era (c.1930) and, having been in storage for nearly a century, remains in excellent condition.
Satsuma imari is one ofthe more elaborate and collectible of the Japanese kilns and dates to from the late Edo Era (c.1850). This dragon bowl required multiple firings with the various detailed colorful glazes.Several of thecolored glazes are raised and form a rich textural relief to the surface.The gold color is applied before the final firing.
The bottom has a stamp that says "Japan" with pictures of cherry blossoms and Mt. Fuji in the background (see picture 10). This bowl is 6 1/2" tall by 7 1/4" wide including the handle and spout(16.5 cm x 18.5 cm).
