Joe Wilson is a talented young Coast Salish artist, born and raised at Koksilah, near Duncan on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. He began his interest in art in elementary school. He began carving at seventeen and was influenced by such talented artists as Simon Charlie and Tim Paul. Joe was also taught by Jim Gilbert. A soft-spoken young man, his work speaks of confidence and strength and he has developed a unique and original style. His colours too, are bold and unconventional, yet extremely appealing and rich. His work is not only authentic by native traditions, it is also an artistic communication link between cultures. Joe's talent will continue to bring him the recognition that is reserved for outstanding artists. An accomplished , world renowned artist and accomplished artist and carver, Joe has been an advocate for H.I.V. / A.I.D.S. and is on the board of directors for K-w-am-Kw'um-S'uli - Strengthening Our Spirit (S.O.S.) . They meet regularly with staff and members from Aids Vancouver Island (Victoria) for education, support and to welcome all peoples living with H.I.V. into a caring environment. With the help of medications, Joe has been living with the virus for over ten years.
This has been a wake up call for me and has given me a whole new perspective on life. This can happen to anyone. I pray to God every night , to take nothing for granted and to give thanks for every good thing. I feel that my life calling is to help people with the disease , however possible through my artistic gift."
Joe's styling can be directly described as Pacific Northwest Native Indian Art Style (specifically Salish). The Pacific Northwest Coast ranges from southern Alaska, British Columbia & the Northern tip of Washington State. Four art styles can be visual referenced through art styles within the Pacific Northwest Coast & this includes 15 main native territories. The North Coast art style includes Tlingit , Tahltan , Nisga's , Kaigani Haida , Haida , Gitksan Coast Tsimshian , Haisla , Nuxalk and Heiltsuk (from Vancouver Island to Alaska including the Queen Charlottes). The Mid Coast art style includes Kwakwawaka'wakw & Oweekeno (Northern Vancouver Island & opposing mainland.) The West Coast art style includes the Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Makah (Southwest Coast of Vancouver Island).
