Five piece sterling coffee and tea service in the Medallion pattern by John R. Wendt for Ball, Black and Co., New York, c1865. Set consists of coffee pot, teapot, creamer,covered sugar, and waste bowl. The set is monogrammed with the initials (CEH) of Charles Edwin Hunt, Sr., the original owner, and has passed through several generations of the family. A gift letter from one member of the family to the a member of the next generation accompanies the set.Each piece marked with BALL, BLACK & CO, ENGLISH STERLING, 20. Total weight of set is approximately 2494 grams (89 ounces).The set has light dings and scratches commensurate with age and the base of the coffee pot is cocked somewhat and is said to be repairable. The insulators on both the coffee pot and tea pot are intact.According to the Nov/Dec 1998 issue of Silver Magazine John Wendt was one of the most important American silversmiths of the nineteenth century and we believe that the praise is justified based on the design and execution of the Medallion series.
