THE FIELD OF ICE
by
JULES VERNE
ILLUSTRATED BY RIOU
Translated from the French.

LONDON & NEW YORK: George Routledge & Sons, circa 1875 [published date: 1875]. Rare First Edition, and first separate edition. 8vo. 7.7 5" x 6" Inches. (LxB). Pp. iv, 269, (16, ads) pages. Bound in fine original publisher's gilt decorated brown cloth binding, with gilt & black lettering on front cover & spine.

This is the edition with the 'London and New York' imprint noted by Myers as 1876- "the printing with 1875 stated has 'London' only imprint."

Our copy with the 'London and New York' imprint & 1875 date, indicates this is an early issue!

Both have 269 pages. Bibliography suggests Routledge produced these copies for the U.S market, with a simultaneous separate issue of the first part, sporting amended title for Americans; 'The English At the North Pole'. An exhilarating narrative of an obsessed British expediter by Jules Verne. This northward excursion led by Captain Hatteras is full of life-threatening adventures and hair-breadth escapes of him and his crew. As he discovers the truth about the polar terrain, this work presents amazing possibilities. A bitter-sweet ending awaits the readers in this mind-boggling thriller! Jules Verne studied law but began writing stories and working in theatre as well. When Verne's father discovered his son was writing, he promptly withdrew his financial support. Verne then worked as a stockbroker. His wife encouraged him to pursue his writing, and he became acquainted with Pierre-Jules Hetzel, an important French publisher. Hetzel helped improve Verne's writings, which until then had been repeatedly rejected by other publishers. He died a wealthy man in 1905. A classic work. Plot Synopsis:
(courtesy of D. Kytasaari -

Richard Shandon and Dr. Clawbonny both receive letters from an unknown party inviting them to accompany an expedition, the destination unknown. Shandon as the chief officer is also empowered to assemble the crew and pay for the construction of the ship for this adventure, the Forward. The completed ship receives its orders, to go north towards Melville Bay. The ship heads north, but as of yet the Captain has not made his appearance. Eventually a member of the crew reveals himself to be Captain John Hatteras. And his goal is for their British crew to be the first to reach the North Pole. When things don't go as Hatteras thought they would, the crew (including Shandon) mutinies and destroys the ship. This occurs while Hatteras and others are attempting to find supplies that might have been left behind by a previous expedition; instead they only find the one survivor of an American expedition. Finding the ship destroyed upon their return, Hatteras, Clawbonny and remaining crew makes a boat out of the ships remains and continue in their attempt to reach the pole.
