Rare sterling silver thimble by James Fenton formerly of 74 Great Hampton Street, Birmingham. Known as the 'Multi-Stone' or 'Scottish Pebble' thimble it has a plain knurled top over a decorative chased border / rim set with semi-precious stones in ovals and diamond shapes. Vacant cartouche. This silver thimble has neither maker's mark nor assay marks. It is stamped with the Registered Design Number 202312 and the size number 12. The design was registered by Alan Howard Elkington for the James Fenton company on November 11, 1892. A nice example of a rare thimble - in round and free of holes, dents and damage. Height approx. 2.6 cm; internal base diameter approx 1.7 cm; weight 8.7 grams.
In British Registered Design Thimbles, pp.10-11, Norma Spicer and Diane Pelham Burn document this thimble as follows:
RD No. 202312 registered November 11, 1892 by Alan Howard Elkington, for the company of James Fenton; he took over from Samuel Boosey, the original ownerâs son-in-law, when he sold the business. This silver thimble has plain indentations down to an applied border, which has eight common semi-precious stones set in it, mainly brown and shades of blue, these being either oval or sideways diamonds. There is line decoration between the stones and a cartouche. This thimble is known as both the 'Multi-stone' and the 'Scottish Pebble'.
