Vintage Autographed Letter from the Secretary of the Navy, James Forrestal(to Lt. Commander Herbert Edmund Angel, US Naval Reserve. Special Citation for "outstanding performance of duty as Assistant Director, Records Administration Division, Executive Office of the Secretary, from February 24, 1944 to March 26, 1945. Displaying keen foresight and ability, Lt. Commander Angel rendered invaluable serve int he development and execution of a program for records disposal throughout the entire Naval establishment which resulted in minimizing cost, personnel, equipment and space both in offices ashore and aboard ship. His judgment and conscientious devotion to an important task reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service." ForrestalFeb 15, 1892- May 22, 1949)served as the first US Secretary of Defense. He served as the Sec. of Navy under President Truman. Angel served as Asst. Director, Records administration Division, in the Executive Office of the Secretary. Angel was my great-great uncle and the letter was passed down through the family. The signature has not been authenticated, but appears to be authentic, written with a fountain pen. You can look at the back side of the letter and see imprint from the typewriter keys, and from the pen pressing down during the signature (see photos). Also, one of the photos shows the thinness of the paper, as you can see the computer keyboard through it (it's the photo taken to illustrate the slight fraying on the edges). This is a wonderful piece of history, both for the autograph, as well as the recognition for efficiency. Would be a great addition to any historical collection of autographs or artifacts. Would also make a nice display item in an office that exemplified the efficiencies that Angel received the citation for. Thanks for looking!
