About this Item:
James Madison (March 16, 1751 – June 28, 1836), fourth President of the United States, authentic, autographed original partly-printed vintage Mediteranean Ships's Passport(DS), dated October 26, 1810. The document is also signed by his Secretary of State Robert Smith (November 3, 1757 - November 26, 1842).
Madison is consideredthe "Father of the Constitution" for being instrumental in the drafting of theUnited States Constitutionas wellas the key champion and author of the Bill of Rights.
Mediterranean Ship's Passports (more commonly known as a "Ship's Scallop" because of the way that they were cut across the top), were documents used to identify a ship as being protected under a treaty with states of the Barbary Coast. Lacking a strong Navy, the United States were among the countries that agreed to pay tributein exchange for protection from capture of ships and crews.
The document measures approximately 10.25" x 15.25" andhas a scalloped upper edge with engraved vignettes of a lighthouse and sailing ship. Documentis signed by Madison and Smith at the conclusion and has light fading to Madison's signature, abrasion and tiny hole where seal was removed at left bottom margin and light general toning and wrinkling.
