Japanese Antique 19th Century Netsuke of a Lounging Hotei:

This is a probably late 19th centurykatabori-netsuke(形彫根付) or \"sculpturenetsuke\" netsuke of great character; hand carved by an artist. The hotei is very happy lounging with his fan. It is well made, with appropriate himotoshi on the bottom, one larger than the other and worn, showing it has been used. I believe it is ox bone, based on the natural cracks along the back that come with age. It is definitely an authentic Japanese netsuke. It has two other half moon carved areas on each side of the himotoshi which are on an added layer to the bottom of the netsuke, which makes me wonder if it was cut out to be attached to something else at one time; besides being used with a sagemono.

SIZE: (Approximately) Length 1 1/2“ or3.81cms; Width 3/4\" or 1.90 cms.

There may be some age wear/age spotsbut in excellent condition with no damage, cracks or chips. It is really interesting how different lighting changes the appearance of netsukes in pictures. (I did not change any lighting in these pictures).

In Japan, Hotei persists in folklore as one of theSeven Lucky Gods(Shichi Fukujin) ofTaoism. In China he is called Budai, and in folklore is admired for his happiness, plenitude, and wisdom of contentment. One belief popular in folklore maintains that rubbing his belly brings wealth, good luck, and prosperity.He is almost always shown smiling or laughing, hence his nickname in Chinese, theLaughing Buddha.(Chinese:笑佛). Please let us know if you have a concern about returns, as you are protected under the buyer protection plan. We will only accept returns if there is a gross error in our description or major injury not identified or other extenuating circumstances. We must be notified of your intention to return an item within 48hours of receipt of the item. Returns due to injury in shipping should not be sent back to us but handled with USPS office locally and with a claim and we will help you with it as much as we are allowed. We are very thorough packers.
