This is a Japanese small tansu /personal storage boxfrom the early 1900's (1910 - 1925)Itismade of kiri wood. Known as paulownia in English it's a very light weight asian wood.The insides (drawers) are also kiri.All the hardware is copper.All the joinery is finger butt joints with bamboo pegs for nails. (See photo # 5) bamboo pegs expand and contract with the difference in humidity. They are an indication of its age and craftsmanship.It is very well made and the drawers fit very well. When you push in the drawers you can feel theair behind the drawerpushing against you.When you push in the middle right drawer the top right drawers come out. Air Hydrolics.
