RARE JAPANESE STERLING SILVER BIRD & FLORAL MEDALLION TEA SET; J. HALL, GLASGOW, 1894; EXCELLENT

We are quite pleased to offer this rare Meiji inspired Scottish Victorian sterling silver tea set.

From J. Hall & Co. in 1894, jewellers located on King Street.

Meiji period Japanese silver was the finest the world has ever known. Much was crafted by former Samurai. Imperial decree had outlawed their warrior culture. Forcing the Samurai to channel centuries old sword making skills into breathtaking presentation and household silver.

The Meiji silver artisans were so highly regarded that Tiffany, Gorham and the leading British firms sent their staff to Japan to \"learn\" (steal) the secrets of the Samurai.

This Japanesque tea set in ovoid form.

Meiji inspired birds set amidst floral oval shape medallion. Each different from the others. Not only on each piece, but across the entire set.

Spread wing bird soaring over marsh. Other exotic birds, including woodpecker amidst bamboo, prunus and more. United by streaming garland. petal gadroon collar rim.

Teapot with elegant leaf engraved bun and globe finial.

Boldly fashioned acanthus cap sweeping elephant ear handle, beaded centre collar.

Never monogrammed.

This Meiji inspired teapot is 8 inches handle to spout 12 standard ounces.

Sugar bowl is 5 1/2 inches 7 1/2 standard ounces.

Cream jug is 4 1/4 inches and 4 1/2 standard ounces.

Excellent condition. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. Stands even on table. Handles secure. The Meiji inspired vignettes and floral border work retain almost all their original detail. Hint original gold interior to smaller pieces.
