We are quite pleased to offer this fine late Meiji sterling silver jewelry casket.
Meiji period Japanese silver was the finest the world has ever known. Much was crafted by former Samurai. Imperial decree had outlawed their warrior culture. Forcing the Samurai to channel centuries old sword making skills into breathtaking presentation and household silver.
The Meiji silver artisans were so highly regarded that Tiffany, Gorham and the leading British firms sent their staff to Japan to "learn" (steal) the secrets.
Classic raised rectangular form.
The cover adorned with beautifully hand decorated scene of carriage in Japanese garden. Silk sash cascading from front carriage supports.
Cover centre with well cast trefoil swing handle. Rising from delicate chrysanthemum petal terminal.
The side panels with conforming streaming prunus displays.
Retains the original burgundy velvet interior lining. And three compartment removable drawer as shown Never monogrammed.
Signed in characters "pure silver" under rim, and second signature to back panel.
This Meiji garden scene casket is 5 1/2 by 4 inches.
Excellent condition. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. Stands even on table or display. The beautifully hand carved garden scene retains its original crisp, vibrant detail. Cover closes firm. Interior in fine state. Few tiny nicks to one back corner and two tiny bumps to cover.
