Efim Wladimirovich (Yehiel) Tschlenow
MEMBERS Yehiel (Efim; Chlenov, Yehiel; 1863 Kremenchug, Poltava province, - 1918, London), a Zionist (see Zionism) leader. Born to a wealthy Hasidic (see Hasidism) family, which in 1876 moved to Moscow. He graduated from the Medical Faculty of Moscow State University (1888) and later became a well-known practitioner. In his early youth members fond ideas of populists, but after the riots in 1881 became one of the organizers and leaders of palestinofilskogo movement in Russia. In 1881 he, along with A. M. Ussishkin organized a meeting of nationally oriented Jewish students, which was the first in Moscow palestinofilsky circle (see Moscow). In 1884, the Members together with J. Maze, P. Marek and A. M. Ussishkin founded in Moscow circle of Jewish students Bnei Zion (the police closed in 1890) and became a member of its board. In 1884, members actively participated in the movement Hibbat Zion (see Hovevei Zion), engaged in the organization of Jewish settlement in Eretz Yisrael.After the 1st Zionist Congress (1897) members joined the Zionist Organization, and became one of the main Zionist leaders in Russia. Members took part in a number of Zionist congresses. In 1902 he was elected Chairman of the Conference of Russian Zionists in Minsk (see Minsk Conference). Led the Russian branch of the Jewish National Fund since its inception and is actively engaged in raising funds for the purchase of land in Eretz Yisrael in the national property of the Jewish people. During the 6th Zionist Congress (August 1903) a group of Ugandan opponents of the plan (see also Zionism. Emergence of Zionism. Activities T. Herzl) comprising 128 delegates, led by Chlenov, left the Congress. Having met in October 1903 in Kharkov (Kharkiv, see Conference), grouping them together in Zion Zion (Zion 'Zionists'), whose leader was A. M. Ussishkin. Territorialism against members wrote a series of articles entitled "Zion and Africa."
