1. WWI British War Medal correctly/named/engraved to 2.Lieut T. H. Mackie, RAF. Sterling Silver medal has normal toning with age. No ribbon present.
2. Photocopy of records indicates Mackie showing up on the roles of the RAF as a 2nd Lieutenant in September 1918. He served in the Stores Depot, Independent Force, Air Depot, BEF, and went on leave in February 1919. He transferred to the unemployment list in 1919. At various times during is career he was a "Tech Officer" and an "Admin Officer." The War Medal was his onlymedal.
The Independent Air Force (IAF), also known as the Independent Force or the Independent Bombing Force and later known as the Inter-Allied Independent Air Force, was a WWI strategic bombing force which was part of the RAF and was used to strike against German railways, aerodromes, and industrial centres without co-ordination with the Army or Navy. It's commander was Lord Trenchard. The unit flew DH-4's, DH-9's, Handley Page Bombers, FE b2's, and Sopwith Camels for escort duties.
