"Paradise Lost, a Poem in Twelve Books" by John Milton. Sixth edition. Printed by Tho. Hodgkin, for Jacob Tonson, at the Judge's-Head near the Inner-Temple-Gate, in Fleet-Street, London, 1695. An impressively sized folio, measuring approximately 8"x 13". This volume contains a general title page (which the second collection lacks), (London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1695), 'Paradise Lost A Poem' (London, Printed by Tho. Hodgkin, 1695), 'A Table' [index to 'Paradise Lost'], 'Annotations on Milton's Paradise Lost (London, Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1695)', 'Paradise Regain'd' (London, Printed by R.E., 1688), and 'Samson Agonistes' (London: Printed by R.E. 1695). Illustrated by Peter Paul Bouche After Rubens. Bound in its original full calf trade binding with raised bands to the spine ends. The book is in good antiquarian condition. The leather is split at the the front hinge, but still holding at the bands. The rear hinge is nearly detached, with just the top band still attached. Wear and fading to the boards with some loss to the leather. Minor moisture stains, foxing, and soiling throughout the contents. With 12 beautiful full page engraved illustrations which are very well preserved. A few small ink notations at the paste-downs and endpapers. The collation is as follows: 2 front blanks; frontispiece; title page; Verse page; blank verso; 1st illustration and page of text; 1-343 complete text with illustrations at 26, 60, 84, 118, 148, 178, 198, 218, 256, 292, 322. "Paradise Lost" ends on page 343 and the "Table for Milton's Paradise Lost" starts and is 3 pages long. "Paradise Regain'd" (1715) starts after the table, full text to the end on pp 66. "Samson Agonistes, a Dramatick Poem" (1695), full text to the end, on pg 57.
