Kl 10" Green Man + Lion Hunt, Stoneware Jug By Face Jug Maker, Southern Folk Art For Sale
Here for sale is a whiskey jugwithslip decorations inspired by Medieval Cathedral Art.
ALion hunting and jumping onto the back of an antelope was a common coffin or sarcophagusdecoration. The green man wasalso common and was often at the top of a pillar or a door frame.
Cathedral art is incorporated into my jugs with the use of colored slips; usually blue for the contrast. I started using thesecarvingsto decorate the jugs with a style I had picked up from the Book of Kells and other illuminated manuscripts.
This type of pottery decorationis called"slipware decoration."
This jug is approx.10.5" high and approx. 6.5" wide.
Thisdoublehandled jugis functional.
This jugwashandmadeof stoneware clayand glazed in a food safe rutile glaze. It was fired in a gas reduction kiln to cone 10 bending.
The jug was turned on a potter'swheel and thena blue slip was painted onto the clay. The pictures of thelion jumping on the antelope, and the green man werethencarved into the clay.
This is a one-of-a-kind hand made artwork.
The artist signature and the numberare carved into the bottom.
It is freshout of the kiln and in perfect mint condition.
