Khmer Sandstone Relief Fragment \'Vishvakarma Seated Atop Kala\', Angkor Period. 11/12th C.
Description: Khmer Sandstone Fragment, beautifully modeled in traditional Angkorian style, depicting the Deity figure \'Vishvakarma\', God of Creation, comfortably seated in a particularly expressive manner, atop the mythical beast \'Kala\' a ferocious monster head, shrouded by the remains of a foliated motif. xxxxxThe deity is depicted in a arched sanctuary squating on one knee, holding an attribute with the left hand, wearing a short stylized Sampot, folded over a plain belt. His head is covered by an elaborate inter-connected diadem crown, surmounted by a conical-shaped headdress. His face appears serene, with arched eyebrows set over almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, thick lips, and elongated earlobes with triangular Khmer style earring pendants.xxxxx His mount, Kala of Angkor is one of three principle animal deities in Khmer mythology, a toothy lion style creature, regarded as a ferocious monster symbolic of absolute time in its all devouring aspect, and associated with the destructive side of the god Shiva. He displays a larger upper Jaw, lined by large carnivorous teeth, bulging eyes, and \"no\" lower Jaw, and he is crowned by lotus petals on his head. A superb naturally aged reddish-brown patina, penetrating the surface of the stone, in wonderful mottled variations of hues and colors.
The sandstone fragment, once part of a complex lintel or wall section, is a well proportioned section, chiseled in deep bas relief from a solid slab of sandstone, intricately rendered, with detailing still clearly visible, and no condition issues, showing even wear on the entire surface, with weathering consistent with age, and minor degradation of the surface.
