Kit Kapp Collection 1880s-1950s Kuna Nuchu Uchu Wood Curing Figure:

1880s - 1950s Nuchu Carving Collected by Kit Kapp. Determining the age of a Kuna wood carving can be a real challenge because it\'s possible for weather and insects to artificially age a piece. This piece has patina that I associate with quite old pieces (it resembles an orswala staff that I have examined that we know was made in the 1800s). But it could have been made as late as the 1950s. The patina is outstanding, the result of years and years of handling. It retains the original Kapp Kuna Expedition 1970 collection tag, with the notation \"UCHU-MIMI FROM ACRRETO 4 AUG.\" This nuchu was collected by Kit Kapp and was in dark storage from 1971 until March of 2014. 9\" high.

More about nuchu carvings. Nuchu carvings are used in healing ceremonies performed by an Inatuledi (shaman or medicine man). The Kuna believe that all sickness is spiritually based. For example, if someone is bitten by a snake, it is not the toxins in the snake\'s venom that make one sick -- it is the fact that the spirit of the snake has kidnapped one or more of the spirits of the human and is hiding them in another dimension of existence. The Nuchu is a basically a storage device that holds special spirits that can be motivated by incense and special chants, so that they go find the kidnapped spirits and return them to the sick person, thus healing him/her.

The Kit Kapp Collection. This nuchu is from the collection of Kit Kapp, who mapped the San Blas Islands from 1960 to January of 1971, and wrote one of the first English-language books on molas.Mola Art from the San Blas Islands. Please note that by offerding on this nuchu, you grant me the right to use its image in the production of a book and web siteon mola art.
