L42 ANTIQUE AMERICAN PAINTED WINDSOR SACK BACK CHAIR
We are pleased to offer this beautiful Antique Painted Windsor Sack Back Chair with continuous arm. Oval saddle seat, shaped swell stretchers. In good condition, old split to seat. Some wear to green paint, still shows well. Late 19th, early 20th century. The name sack-back refers to a sack-like covering that is said to have been pulled over the backs of these chairs with the purpose of warding off winter drafts. Sack-backs almost always had an oval seat. Sometimes shield or D shaped seats were used, but these would be custom-made chairs. Basic production models would have seven long spindles and four short ones, fancier ones might have nine long and six short. A Windsor chair is a chair built with a solid wooden seat into which the chair-back and legs are round-tenoned, or pushed into drilled holes, in contrast to standard chairs, where the back legs and the uprights of the back are continuous. The seats of Windsor chairs were often carved into a shallow dish or saddle shape for comfort. Traditionally, the legs and uprights were usually turned on a pole lathe. The back and sometimes the arm pieces (if arms are present) are formed from steam bent pieces of wood.
