L81 RARE GIANT 15.5 IN WM GUERIN LIMOGES 1920s HP GRAPES BUMBLE BEE PUNCH BOWL
We are very pleased to offer this Mammoth, Magnificent and Rare 1920s hand painted Limoges porcelain collar based 15.5 inch x 7.5 inch punch bowl from the fabled firm of William Guerin, ca. 1915 to 1925. Our factory internally gilded example features stunning bunches of grapes and leaves, and are accompanied with a unique & prominent Bumble Bee! The depth of colors and realism, are simply stunning, and this bowl is one of the largest non footed examples ever produced in Limoges. The usual diameter of the French punch bowl was 14 inches, but two famed potters were known for their 15.5 inch forms; these were Tressemann & Vogt, and William Guerin. This incredible punch bowl carries the proper Limoges over France Wm. Guerin base stamp, used from 1901 to 1932 (Ms. Gaston & DuBay mark #3), and is in excellent condition. Of all the producers of fine Limoges, William Guerin had the deserved reputation for supplying perhaps the strongest of all the Kaolin rich clay formulas in the Limoges region, and coupled with their incredible factory decorating department, Guerin Limoges items are some of the most valuable of all the period pieces. Research consulted: Collectors Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain 3rd Ed. / by Mary Frank Gaston; The Decorative Art of Limoges Porcelain & Boxes / by Keith & Thomas Waterbrook-Clyde; Living With Limoges, Antique Limoges At Home, Collecting Hand Painted Limoges Porcelain (Boxes to Vases), and Antique Trader Limoges Price Guide / all by Debby DuBay; La Porcelaine de Limoges (Paris Edition) / by Jean D Albis and Celeste Romanet.William Guerin (1838-1912) was born near Limoges and as a boy, was trained in porcelain techniques by his father. After military service, he rented a porcelain finishing workshop in the Faubourg Montjovis (Limoges) ca. 1866, decorating specialized export porcelain. In 1872 Guerin took over the porcelain workshop of Lebron & Cie. Then in 1877 he bought the porcelain factory that had been established by Jouhanneaud and Dubois in Rue du Petit Tour (Limoges), and which had been bought in 1867 by the Utzschneider Company of Sarreguemines and run by Leopold Dubois. This enlarged company produced a wide range of wares, selling prime highly stylized White Ware in Europe and America, yet also continuing and expanding the factory decoration function. Guerinâ¿¿s sons William and Andre joined the company in 1903, and in 1911 W. Guerin & Cie merged with the nearby Jean Pouyat factory, buying majority control of Pouyat, with the new firm being named Guerin & Cie. In 1920 to 1921, Bawo & Dotter Ltd., also owner of the Elite name bought Guerin & Cie and became Guerin Pouyat Elite, with Carl Bawo as technical director from 1923. The marks of all 3 firms continued to be used until the factory closed in 1932. During its history, Wm Guerin produced some of the hottest fired, most durable & gorgeously interpretive hand painted Limoges porcelain ever seen!
