A massive 18th Century, George III, solid sterling silver, gilt lined tankard. 401g. 1773.In excellent condition, no splits, gilt complete, pedestal base sits perfectly.Two small dings barely visible below the handle. Please see photos & condition description.Absolutely commensurate with age & use, & the 100% original & unrestored nature of this piece.Otherwise perfect, could perhaps use a polish!Decorated in the rococo revival style, this is a very large tankard with a capacity of more than a pint & a quarter, of a bellied baluster design, with sharp foliate swirls & acanthus capped handle, which shows no signs at all of ever having been squashed into the body.This vessel is made from a very thick gauge of silver, & it shows.Weight 401g, height 13.3 cms, dia at rim 8.7 cms, dia at belly 10 cms, dia at base 9.5 cms.Clearly hallmarked to base for London date letter "S", 1773, respected maker Charles Wright.Presentation inscription, from lawyers to a lawyer - who else could afford a piece of this quality & size?! - reads:PRESENTEDto William Watkins,BY THE SOCIETY OF THE SONS OF EQUITY,as a testimonial of respect & regard,and in acknowledgement ofTHE VALUABLE ASSISTANCE RENDERED BY HIMas a Member and Promoter of that SocietyDURING A PERIOD OF 19 YEARS:18th June 1856
