LARGE 19TH CENTURY CHINESE CARVED SANDALWOOD BRISE FAN
Very large and spectacular 19th century Cantonese (Chinese) brisé fan, made of sandalwood, and carved with innumerable figures and motifs, as well as a cartouche for initials, still blank. This wonderful fan has been preserved in a lacquer box of beautiful curvilinear design and decorated with gilt flowers and plants, and a typical scene of scholars departing in a garden. The inside sports a gorgeous hand-painted decoration of birds among flowers. This box has the very unusual feature of still having its key, which works.
Box: 39.7cm (length) x 7cm (height) x 9.8cm (width)
Fan, open: 60cm (length) x 33.5cm (width)
Fan, closed: 33.4cm (length, not including the tassel, nor the suspension ring) x 4cm (height) x 4cm (width)
Weight (fan): 201gr
Weight (box + key): 411gr
Excellent overall condition, with all its sticks and guards perfectly preserved, with no damages or restorations. The band holding the sticks together is broken, but its replacement should be both easy and economical. The lacquer box has some small damages (parts where the white background or the wood upon which the lacquer was laid is now visible), all illustrated. Please, see the attached pictures for a better illustration of their condition.
