Large Chinese Silk Hand Embroidered Silk Manton De Manila Piano Shawl W/ Pagoda For Sale
VERY LARGE ANTIQUEEARLY 1900's/20th CENTURY
CHINESE EXPORTHAND EMBROIDERED SILKMANTON DE MANILA
A very fine, Chinese ivory silk piano shawl, hand embroidered in a magenta silk thread, depicting a pagoda with two figures (withbrighter pink silk thread faces)and chyrsanthemums on two corners on one side, and a bird and chyrsanthemum on the other two corners opposite. In doing so,it enables the user to decide what pattern they want to show on their back - the pagoda, or the bird. The shawl is trimmed in a long fringe made of a tiny ivory silk cord woven together by hand. The shawl dates to the late 19th, early 20th century, and was likely part of the Chinese export tradeto Spain, and other parts of the world during that time.
This was recently deaccessioned from a museum collection, and thankfully, I was able to purchasethese few shawls listed this weekfrom that collection.
(For laceelements from thisera, alsodeaccessioned from a museum, please check outour other user name: fleursdeslise. We'll be putting lace and linens up this week.)
Fringe Length: 13"
Silk: 64" x 62"
(Total - 77" x 75")
Very good condition. There is some general discoloration due to age, with a few darker spots (less than the size of a US penny or dime. There are a few pulled threads in the fine silk, again due to age and use, but very minimal. No holes or tears.A spectacular example of Chinese silk.
