Large Mcloughlin Bros Game Of Playing Department Store Vintage 1898 Antique For Sale
Original 1898 game by Mcloughlin Bros of New York titled The Game of Playing Department Store. Not only is this a very colorful and graphic game but it is quite large measuring 22" by 15". What a great decorative display this gameboard --and the box cover-- would make. Instructions for the game are printed on the inside surface of the lid. Interesting game...I played it a couple times before this listing. It lists there being 54 total round cardboard markers (half would be yellow and half would be black) but there are only 19 here. 12 yellow and 7 black. There are also the round cardboard "coins" of various denominations. The instructions dont say how many of these come with the game so I dont know if any are missing. There are twelve 10 cent, eleven 25 cent, eleven 50 cent, eight $1, ten $2.50, and eight $5 "coins". As you can see in the photos the right side of the game board hinges up to expose the storage compartment for the game pieces. That hinged lid is in fine condition with no tearing. The spinner is still present and works fine. I recently picked this up from a local estate that was full of its familys treasures dating back to the late 1800s so this was a "one owner" game. Estates like that are getting pretty scarce. The photos show it pretty well. It is just as I got it with no cleaning or repairs. No tears or holes in the game board or the surface of the lid--only on the corner edges of the lid. There is the normal surface wear but overall I am very impressed with how well a paper surface game like this has survived so well for 115 years. I have never seen one of these games before and hope that it is a rare one. Most items i list are from local estates and usually they are in areas of collecting that I have little or no knowledge of. I value honesty and fairness in my selling and appreciate the same from my buyers Please feel free to email me with your suggestions to improve my listings. Thank you.On Feb-17-13 at 10:55:30 PST, seller added the following information:
CORRECTION: THERE ARE 22 (not 19 as I stated in the listing) OF THE ROUND CARDBOARD MARKERS. 12 YELLOW AND 10 BLACK. I JUST FOUND 3 ADDITIONAL BLACK ONES THAT I HAD OVERLOOKED.
