RARE LARGE FINE QUALITY PAIR GEORGIAN 18TH CENTURY William Sharp SOLID SILVER SHOE BUCKLES
William Sharp ......London 1794

This is aRare Fine Quality large Pair of Solid Silver & Steel Shoe Buckles crafted by the 18th Century Silversmith William Sharp, they were Assayed in London in 1794 making them 223 years old, the design and decoration is stunning, so very elegant and timeless, they are Rectangle in shape with a beautiful curve to the body allowing them to sit snugly against the top of the foot, The decoration is stunning they have a smooth finish to the silver body which then has the most elegant decoration of bead work to the edges contrasting beautifully, these are so very typical of the style in the 18th century very elegant and understated, these rare Shoe Buckles are of a large size and are fully hallmarked, the quality of the craftsmanship is superb as you would expect. they shout out elegance of the period. These fine quality Buckles would have once belonged to a wealthy Georgian Gentleman and been worn daily, this was in a time many years ago when things where so very different, they are so very tactile and have a lovely feel in your hand, once picked up you wont want to put them down. They have a very good weight to them so are lovely and strong, they weigh an impressive 109 grams. These will add something very special to any collection, my photos dont do it justice...they are both fully hallmarked to the side of the buckles

Shoe bucklesarefashion accessoriesworn by men and women from the mid-17th century through the 18th century. Shoe buckles were made of a variety of materials includingbrass, steel, silverorsilver gilt, and buckles for formal wear were set withdiamonds, quartzorimitation jewels

Buckled shoes began to replace tied shoes in the mid-17th century:Samuel Pepyswrote in hisDiaryfor 22 January 1660 \"This day I began to put on buckles to my shoes, which I have bought yesterday of Mr. Wotton.\"The fashion at first remained uncommon enough though that even in 1693 a writer to a newspaper complained of the new fashion of buckles replacing ribbons for fastening shoes andknee bands.Separate buckles remained fashionable until they were abandoned along withhigh-heeled footwearand otheraristocraticfashions in the years after theFrench Revolution, although they were retained as part of ceremonial andcourt dressuntil well into the 20th century. In Britain in 1791 an attempt was made by buckle manufactures to stop change in fashion by appealing to the then Prince of WalesPrince George. While the prince did start to require them for his court this didn\'t stop the decline of the shoe buckle. It has been suggested that the decline drove the manufactures of steel buckles to diversify into producing a range ofcut steel jewellery
