Large Rs Prussia Melon Eaters Porcelain Ribbon & Jewel Mold Tankard:
LARGE RS PRUSSIA MELON EATERS PORCELAIN RIBBON & JEWEL MOLD TANKARD
This is a substantial piece of R. S. Prussia in a rare form and decoration. The Melon Eaters decoration, both obverse and reverse, is strong and bold as is the dark green background color. The portraits are transfers but there is ample hand decorated embellishment. The jewels (8 of them) are in a pearl tiffany finish. Lots of gold trim and added falling leaves in various shades of brown, purple and green.
The tankard is signed on the bottom with the Prussia red star mark.
This is a beautiful and desirable piece of RS Prussia.
The tankard mold is pictured on page 131 of the book The Collector’s Encyclopedia of R. S. Prussia by Mary Frank Gaston. It is Plate 330, Mold 522. The mark is also pictured in this book as Plate 4, Mark 4 on page 33. The “melon eaters” decoration is also pictured several places in this same book

Age and Condition
The tankard is circa 1900.
Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item. In looking over the tankard I see no chips, flea bites or repairs. There is some wear to the gold trim and decoration at the high points and a few minor scratches. There is also a short hairline on the rim that extends downwards less than an inch on the outside of the piece and just slightly more than an inch inside, which is shown clearly in the last photo. The other issues mentioned are also clearly shown in the photos. I do not feel the hairline is significant as the tankard still rings like a bell when tapped on any part of the rim or the handle.
Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece. It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.
The tankard stands about 11.625” (29.5 cm) tall, is about 8.625” (21.9 cm) from the tip of the spout to the tip of the handle and the base is about 5.5” (14 cm) across.
The tankard weighs about 2 pounds, 10-3/8 ounces (1203 grams).
