Large Vintage Lot, App. 185 Pieces Sheet Music 1900-1929, Art Deco, irving Berlin:
This is a large lot (over 180 pieces) of various sheet music from the turn of the last century (how strange is that to say). There are 46 pieces dated 1900 to 1909 and 139 pieces dated 1920 to 1929. Lots of gorgeous covers that highlight a wide variety of subjects. There are Irving Berlin tunes published by his own company, music written by DeSylva, Brown and Henderson and others published by that trio before they became enamored of movies and Fox and Paramount in particular. Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg (both of Wizard of Oz) fame are here, as are Victor Herbert, Rudolf Friml and Sigmund Romberg. There are some tunes that are dedicated to old-time actresses such as Norma Talmadge, Catherine Calvert, Olga Petrova, Grace Moore and the famous Nazimova (Garden of Alla fame). How many even know who these people are? Some great artists plied their talents on covers here, such as A.S. Trueman, Barbelle, Mary Kidder, Frederick Manning and others. It seems that most of the themes embrace romance, love and joy. A different era ... a different time. Please understand that this sheet music was used, and as such may have some writing here and there and condition ranges from very good to poor. Many are well used but all are complete. There are some duplicates. Size is usually in the 9" x 12" range but there are a few that are smaller (one piece explains that it was because of the war effort that they reduced the size of the paper). And this was World War I! A nice, nostalgic peek at musical life back then. Oh, and by the way ... which famous lady had Nazimova as her godmother? None other than Nancy Reagan!!
