I will do my best to qualify as much as I can and know about these cars. The Blue Comet was a real train that was the fastest one running on the Central RR of New Jersey between Jersey City and the resorts at Atlantic City. And the train really was blue. Each car is named for a real comet. One of the real ones still survives attached to a restaurant off an interstate in NJ. The Lionel set was made with many similar construction details as the State Set and the Comet cars are only slightly smaller than the state cars. They are 18&3/4" long and heavy...approx close to 5lbs each. Made by Lionel between 1930 and 1940.These 3 are original cars and most of the paint and parts are also original. On paint, only the lighter blue center portion of the roofs have been professionally restored. Doyles book indicates type IV had bodies with diaphragms painted the same color as the body which these do. Two cars have the nickel stamped journal covers and one car appears to have trucks with cast journal covers which is usually an earlier style. I could get all the cars to light but one socket needs a "button" in the bottom..I ran a test wire directly to the bulb on that one. One pick up needs the tiny "terminal screw" that holds the wire. But wiring should be updated. Two of the brass steps were recently replaced with repro steps. Several of the handrails and clips holding them have been replaced. I have repro seats to replace the 2 missing inside the Westphal and all 15 from the Tempel. I couldn't decide if I wanted to screw them down or hot glue, etc. so decided to leave that to the new owner. They are shown in picture 12 along with extra "stained glass" (original type) for one side of the Tempel. Also in that picture is a roll of I believe either Mylar or clear Celluloid for replacing the windows in Tempel and if you wish to replace the other two cars there is enough there. Note: Window bars on the large windows in the back of "Tempel" are not missing, they were not there as the rear of the car did not have a bathroom...it was for looking out "observation".Also..the "drum head" for the obs.platform is available last I checked from parts dealers. Also included is a coupler as one of them on Faye is a combination style that probably was installed a very long time ago. In looking closely I found a couple of handrails were evidently and cleverly repaired and held in place with thin brass wire...kind of coiled. It's an interesting repair I've never noticed before. I personally think it adds some charm to the piece as it is something you wouldn't notice and if you did you'd admire whoever did the job. I can include replacement clips/peavey's for the new owner, an easy job. There is some paint loss/chips on the rear of the roof (original dark blue portion) of the observation. Typical on any passenger set...the last car was almost always the first to fall off in a derailment. What else can I say...my mother would be after me because the bathrooms are dirty! The interiors are all dusty....I believe before I got them they were left for display with the roofs off so you could see the sinks, toilets, toilet seats, chairs, etc. The design of the roof was such that my moving spring loaded levers the roofs would pop on and off easily and quickly so you could show off all the detail inside. I don't have an engine, which is why I'm selling. A really nice looking set for display or running on the layout, just plain pretty having the original patina and old look...but not perfect by any means.I've tried to point out all I can see so there aren't any surprises for the winner, other than their looking better in person. I don't like splitting up passenger sets so hopefully the buyers will feel the same! Will use Parcel Post as due to the size and weight of the box it would be very costly to ship Priority. If you want it, let me know... If shipping seems high, ask me to calculate or re-check. Please do not use self check out until I can determine final shipping expense as I've had to include signature guarantee for protection service and an insurance estimate. Ship weight will be approx 20lbs. total, large box. Actual shipping may be lower depending on final hammer price.
