The African lion is the 2nd largest of the big cat family (tigers are larger.) They live on the grasslands and savanna of Africa - although they once populated huge areas of the world. A lioness, like this one, can weigh from 270 - 400 lbs. and stand 4' tall at the shoulders. A group of a few adult males, a larger number of related females and their offspring is called a pride. A lioness gives birth to 1 -4 cubs - all the lionesses in the pride cooperate to care for and nurse the cubs. Lions are considered a "vulnerable species" - their numbers have dropped by 30-50% in the last 20 years, mainly due to loss of habitat and conflicts with humans.
