I am extremely pleased to offer this beautiful candia papillon vase in a classic jugendstil form. The production number, I-7580 is documented (see last photo scan). This example alsovase carries a rare birthmark - the matte intaglio \"crossed arrows\" mark with the word Austria underneath that was \"found only on a few glass pieces made in 1898\"**. The crossed arrows symbol was derived from the von Spaun coat of arms.

Maximilian Ritter von Spaun was the son of Maximilian Sr. and Karoline Loetz, the daughter of Johann and Susanne Loetz. In 1879, Susanne (Loetz\'s widow, hence the firm\'s name: Loetz Witwe) transferred ownership of the glassworks to her grandson after her son, Anton Loetz, passed away (in 1877). Eduard Prochaska was made head of the glassworks a year later, and soon they began receiving patents to make various types of colored glass - the rest is history, that I won\'t recount further here, as there are books that cover this in depth.

The crossed arrow with stars symbol became the trademark for the firm in 1891. Most pieces with variations of this mark (with and without writing) are found on pieces given by von Spaun to various museums, or possibly on pieces that were given as gifts by von Spaun. It is unclear what significance this variation has, other than that it is rare and is only found on a limited number of pieces made in 1898.
