Los Castillo Vtg Taxco Mexico Mexican Sterling Silver Amethyst Pendant Necklace

LOS CASTILLO VTG TAXCO MEXICO MEXICAN STERLING SILVER AMETHYST PENDANT NECKLACE
Description

This is an EXTRAORDINARY sterling silver repousse brooch that was hand wrought in Taxco, Mexico, circa 1940's, by world renowned silver maestros at LOS CASTILLO. Maestro Don Antonio Castillo began his illustrious career working with the "Father of Mexican Silver", Maestro William Spratling, at Taller de Las Delicias. In 1939, he left Spratling and opened LOS CASTILLO, with his brothers and his wife at the time, Margot van Voorhies Carr (aka Margot de Taxco) ~ they later divorced. This spectacular brooch is masterfully crafted in a bold and dramatic artistic motif that has a beautiful art nouveau look. It has a large (1-1/8" long, 1-1/8" wide, and 3/8" thick) luscious, dark purple amethyst cabochon that is in a raised bezel setting and has tiny silver bead accents at the top. The amethyst stone is framed on either side with sculptural silver scrolls and swirls and at the bottom with silver scrolls and tiny silver bead accents. The identical Los Castillo brooch is featured in the 1944 advertisement for the La Tausca store on Fifth Avenue in New York (please see photos for the ad). Repoussage is a technique where malleable metal (such as sterling silver) is shaped or ornamented by hammering from the back or underside. This technique is extremely time consuming and can take an artist an entire day or several days to complete just one piece. The silver has acquired a wonderful, soft patina that reflects the shadows created by the depth of the designs. My jeweler made a custom sterling silver pendant adaptor that slips over the pin portion of the clasp so that this may be worn as a pendant. I am including a new Mexican sterling silver collar style necklace so that the winner can immediately wear this as a necklace. The locking pin clasp works as it should. This is such a versatile piece ~ like getting several pieces of jewelry in one as you can wear the brooch alone, or as pendant on the sterling collar necklace, or wear one of your own pendants on the sterling collar! This brooch/pendant is extremely well made in a sophisticated and timeless design by silver maestros, LOS CASTILLO ~ an elegant art-to-wear treasure that will be one of your all-time favorites to be worn and cherished ~ it is collector and heirloom quality ~ quite simply ~ THE BEST!!!

SIZE: Brooch: Length is 2-5/8", width is 2-1/4", and weight is 40 grams. Necklace: Inside circumference when closed is 15-1/4" plus the 2-1/4" opening in the back for a total of 17-1/2" (is somewhat adjustable), width is 1/8", and weight is 16.3 grams. Total weight of set is 56.3 grams.

CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition ~ no dings/dents to the silverwork ~ no chips, cracks or damage to amethyst cabochon (only naturally occuring inclusions and color variances inherent to Mexican amethysts), minor scratches due to loving wear and age ~ just about PERFECT used condition!

HALLMARKS: Brooch: "LOS CASTILLO, TAXCO, STERLING, MADE IN MEXICO, 696 (design number)" Necklace: "MEX, 925". LOS CASTILLO is shown on pages 99-105 of Bille Hougart's highly respected source book, The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks (2006 edition). Mr. Hougart indicates that Los Castillo used this linear hallmark circa 1940 to 1945.

PLEASE NOTE: For Mexican jewelry artists and designers, silver is their canvas. In their hands, craft meets creativity and silver becomes wearable art. The various techniques are like a painter’s brushstrokes ~ they make each piece unique and a timeless object of beauty. Mexican vintage silver jewelry is handwrought, and therefore, not perfect ~ each piece will have variances that indicate that the piece is hand made. Vintage pieces will show various signs of wear since they have been pre-loved ~ items are described to the best of my ability and any damage will be noted.
