Louis Brandt & Frere Early Omega Pocket Watch Cal. 19 C.1895 Extremely Rare For Sale
Up for sale is an extremely rareand highly collectible .875 Silver open face pocket watch made by the famous Swiss watchmaking company Louis Brand & Frere, Omega as we know today. This watch has been manufactured around 1895 and it was designed by François Chevillat. It was the first movement to wear the Omega logo, who would later give the company name. The Swiss made movement engraved with Omega symbol on the balance cock, is in perfect working condition, and has a winding mechanism through the crown at twelve. The watch was retailed on the Russian Empire market, as it bears the Russian silver purity hallmarks: 0.875, 84 (see pictures), and the Swiss rampant bear hallmark (see pictures). An extremely rare item signed Louis Brandt & Frere, in their early times. A museum item! Before 1877, Louis Brandt, the father of Louis-Paul and César Brandt, was already enjoying a great success in selling his watches across Europe, under the Louis Brandt & Fils brand. And what a legacy he left... According to Omega Museum, this is what they mention about their first 100 years of existence:The first brands were Louis Brandt and Gurzelen in 1882, followed by Décimal in 1884 and Labrador in 1885. The combination of these brands covering different market sectors allowed the company to expand and by 1889 it was the largest manufacture of finished watches in Switzerland, producing a then-staggering 100,000 watches per year and employing 600 people. This unparalleled success led to the firm becoming a centre of research and development with many firsts, including the first minute repeating wristwatch in 1892, the first full calendar watches with “big date” in 1893 and a new Carillion repetition system in 1894. Arguably, the most influential was an improved winding and hand setting mechanism in 1895 which would be used in the newly created OMEGA calibre. The unprecedented ease of repair and accuracy of this movement, due to the high level of precision during the manufacture, led to global success for the brand and as a result the company officially changed its name to Louis Brandt & Frére - OMEGA Watch Co. in 1903.A small description about the Calibre 19", made in 1894: This
calibre made history. It incorporated revolutionary manufacturing
methods and introduced a production line concept which was ultimately
adopted by the entire Swiss watch industry. It was the calibre 19''' but
it was better known by the name “Omega”.
Designer: François Chevillat
The calibre 19''' occupies a very special place in OMEGA’s history. The
renowned 19''' calibre (''' = lines; 19''' = 43 mm diameter) was
characterised by the perfection of its design by François Chevillat, the
ingenuity of certain mechanisms, such as time-setting using the winding
stem and by its relatively modest price. It was manufactured using
methods that were revolutionary at the time: mechanised or
industrial-scale production and "divided" assembly whose production line
was based on the complete interchangeability of each component in the
movement, a system adopted progressively by the entire Swiss watch
Considered the last word in
watchmaking technology of the time, the movement was named Omega by
analogy with the 24th and last letter of the Greek alphabet, a synonym
for accomplishment, completion, perfection and crowning excellence. It
was an astonishing success and its name was given to the company in
1903.L. BRAND & FRERE Trademark: Louis Brandt & Frere was registered as a trademark on 2 / 5 / 1895, in Bienne, Switzerland, for producing ebauches, watch cases, dials and complete pocket watches. TODAY
