Charming and unusualLate18thC French love token/memento in the form of a gold-mounted faux Tortoiseshell box. The lidismounted with asilver plaquesurroundedin tinystar-and-dot picquet. Apparently unmarked, the gold tests18k and the silver is sterling or better. The inside of the lid holds a surprise: a small bow of hair tied in a love knot under glass.

This rather small and tactilebox is just under 3 inches and measures2 & 15/16" x 3/4" x 5/8" (7,4 x 1,9 x 1,6 cm)

This very rare pre-French Revolution circa 1785 box was once lined in fine silkwhich still can be seenalthough much faded and missing some patches. Otherwise NO losses. NO repairs. One small and unremarkable hairline to the left of the gold thumbpiece on the front of the box.Solid hinge with smooth action.Positive closure withfirm fit. Overall the box isa very fine and rareearly example inexcellent condition.
