LUCRETIA GARFIELD LUCRETIA R. GARFIELD
Lucretia R. Garfield sends her thanks for the birthday wishes for her year old granddaughter with original mailing envelope.
Comprises: (1) Black-bordered Autograph Letter Signed: "Lucretia R. Garfield", 1p, 3¾x5½. (South Pasadena, California), 1911 May 10. On her LRG monogrammed stationery to Mrs. Dangler. In full: "Thank you for your friendly greeting this bright May morning, the birth-day of my youngest little grand-daughter just one year old. With best wishes to you." Fine condition. (2) Black-bordered envelope franked at the upper right: "Lucretia R. Garfield/Free", 4x3. Addressed by her to: "Mrs. Dangler/Caurenthen/Lake Forest/Illinois". South Pasadena postmark over surname. Torn at upper right and on flap from opening, else fine condition. After her husband's assassination in 1881, Mrs. Garfield used black-bordered stationery until her death in 1918 at the age of 85. She is likely writing this letter from the home of her daughter Mary "Molly" Garfield, who married Joseph Stanley-Brown in Mentor, Ohio and moved to southern California. On November 11, 1858, 26-year-old James A. Garfield and 26-year-old Lucretia Rudolph, whom he called "Crete", were wed in Hiram, Ohio. They had five sons and two daughters: Eliza (1860-1863), Harry (1863-1942), James (1865-1950), Mary "Molly" (1867-1947), Irvin (1870-1951), Abram (1872-1958) and Edward (1874-1876). The grandchild (Mrs. Garfield's 14th) mentioned in this letter was Irvin's daughter, Jane Garfield, who was born on May 10, 1910. Two items.
