THE ORIGINAL LATCH / KEY HAS BEEN DISPOSED OF. To latch you must hold down the button as you lower the lid and then release button. This prevents it from automatically latching upon being closed as it originally did and was a safety hazard. Once closed, you can use the key to lock it. Nice cedar chest.
