Vintage 1933 Dual Speaker Truetone tombstone radio. Restored. Very uncommon set! Free delivery to the AWA-Charlotte radio meet 3/22-3/23 Up for offers is a very hard to find 1933 Truetone dual speaker radio in a large tombstone style cabinet. Introduced in the Spring of 1933, this great looking Truetone radio is a 7 tube set covering the AM broadcast band. While Stein Vol. 4 identifies this as a model TSS, I could find no information to verify that. This chassis and similar cabinet stylings were also offered under other brand names including, but not limitedto: Lafayette (Model L-18), Gulbranson and Airline (Montgomery-Ward). Manufactured by Wells-Gardner for all of the above, this unique 1933 Truetone tombstone radiowas refinished and electronically restored by its previous owner about 15 years ago. When it came to radio chassis manufacturing, Wells-Gardner was considered to be on the higher endof the quality spectrum. This reputationallowed Wells-Gardner to contract most of their radio business to outside interests including large companies like Montgomery-Ward and Western Auto (Truetone). Theyalsocontractedto make and brandradios formany smaller independents and even local radio dealers at one point. Thisunique radio cabinet has a heart shaped cut out in the center of the large ornate grille and is very eye-catching. The veneer surrounding the dial, knobs and grilleis a really gorgeous burled walnut. This heavy duty cabinet and chassis are both solid as a rock and very well built. There are a couple of small veneer repairsto thecabinet. One on thetop, back left sideand oneon top at the very back. There isalsoa hairline crack ina solid wood portion of the cabinet on the upper left side(see close-up pictures). There are a couple of other minor cabinet blemishes considerednormal for an 80 year oldradio. The set has period reproduction grille cloth and a more modern line cord. The dial pointer is mounted inside the cabinet on a shaftin front of the tuning condenser. The pointer and aportion of the dial surrounding it are backlighted for a very nice effect. The twosix inch electro-magnetic speakers were designed with differently pitched frequencies to offer a higher sound quality. The set has fourcontrol knobs. The On/Offknob is factory mounted on the left side of the cabinet. Other versions of this set usedeither a toggle switch or an additional front control knob. The three knobs on the front of the cabinet are for volume, tuning and tone control. Reception and quality of sound is best when using a long external antenna but in using a short antenna wire, reception was excellent with local stations coming in loud and clear. Weaker station receptiondid have some minor background noise. Since it has been at least15 years since this great looking set was worked on, it is highly recommended it be given the "once-over" by a qualified technician before being enjoyed on a regular basis. Dimensions of this unique and beautiful radio are:18 inches tall,17 inches wide and11 inches deep. This really is one well built radio. From the cabinet to the speakers and chassis, it is high quality personified. The unpacked weight of this beauty is 32 pounds. To insure safe arrival, all empty space inside the cabinet will be filled with packing so tubes will stay secure in their sockets and the speakers will not be subject to movement. The set will also be double bubble wrapped, carefully packed and insured for its full value.
