An exceptional, very largeancient Greek Apulian pottery Oinochoe, attributed to the white sakkos painter, dating to320-310BC.

The large Oinochoe (or wine jug), is of typical form, with flaring stemmed base, acorn-shaped body, cylindrical neck, trefoil lip and arching strap handle, with moulded mask appliquéat the join with the mouth.

Exquisitelydecorated in red-figure technique with three female 'lady of fashion' figures; all wearing himatia (gowns), the one on the left holding a mirror and open pyxis, leaning on an altar, the central figure holding a tambourine, a large hydria inscribed 'M' tipping over by her feet, the right figure holding a fan and ornate handled chest, stood before a thymiaterion. Ribbons, garlands and foliage adorn the field. Rosettes adorn the upper register and wave pattern the lower register. Radiate and ovolo decoration adorn the neck, whilst the mouth is beautifully decorated with a white and gold female mask appliqué.

One of the finest large scale Apulian ceramics available on the market. A beautiful object reflecting the heights of ceramic art achievedin Greek South Italy during the late 4th Century BC. Compare a much smaller and inferior piece sold over 7 years ago for $11,000.

Condition: Very good, handle reattached, otherwise unrestored.
