ANTIQUE CHINESE PORCELAIN PALE BLUE-GRAY MONOCHROME CELADON CONG SHAPED VASE

The featured item represents an antique Chinese porcelain vase with celadon glaze that measures approximately 12 1/2\" tall from the floor to the top of the opening, 3 1/4\" in diameter a the lips and 5 3/4\" in diameter at the base.

The vase is hand crafted in the shape of an ancient jade cong with rectangular body an a cylindrical tapering neck with short straight base. The celadon glaze is pale blue-grayish but the true color may not appear quite right on the pictures. The side panels are about 12 1/2\" x 6 1/2\" and have incised borders.

The vase is not marked but I believe the piece to have been made during the Qing dynasty. The saw-like edge on the glaze at the foot is a feature common for wares made in the Qianlong period. But I don\'t have solid proof to back up that speculation.

I simply could not find the same vase anywhere online. I searched both in English and Chinese but a piece with such shape, size, glaze and flat sides was not discovered. Usually, the cong shaped vases that have celadon glaze would feature molded decoration with tiagrams or other geometric patterns. If not that, they would have crackle glaze or/and handles. You can find flat paneled cong vases in other monochrome colors or overglaze enamels decoration but not in that pale blue celadon.

So, unless my search is incomplete it appears that the piece is rare examples of a cong shaped celadon glazed vase.

The item comes in well-preserved condition for its age. No cracks, chips or repairs. Normal production flaws like small areas not completely covered by the glaze, small bumps and grits. Sand grit to the foot rim as well as age signs as rust spots and buffed color due to the bleeding of the iron in the glaze. Slight irregularity the shapes of the different parts, the edges, corners and the incised borders as well as uneven surfaces. The panels are not entirely flat but slightly convex. All that is due tot he fact that the vase was crafted by hands. Some areas appear to show a yellowish staining.

There is a crack in the glaze on the inside of the neck as shown on photo # 9. It is a bit longer that what you can see but I cannot capture the whole crack line ont he picture as it goes down and under the curve. Also, some glaze pooling and piling

on the interior. There may be minor handling and shelf wear like small scuffs and scratches here and there.
