This is a very unusual and extra large sized futuristic looking Faceted block glass ashtray with submerged colors within the glass of pale lilac pink in to clear glass. The glass changes colour when placed in artificial light known as Alexandrite (Neodymium). A superb example of mid 20th century glass design. Normally glass designs of this kind are attributed to Mandruzzato. A very fashionable piece of art glass originally made on the Island of Murano.
Sommerso is a term for a technique used to make colored glass in all shapes and forms. The basic principle ofSommersoinvolves submerging different colors beneath clear glass to form colored glass creations that can include vases, sculptures and beads. Simmers glass is known for its shine, color and dramatic effect.
TheSommersotechnique is unique. It features a solid color of molten glass fused with a second layer of clear glass that serves to preserve the color of the first layer without allowing it to fade into the second layer. Colored layers of glass are sealed within layers of clear glass. Clear layers are blended together to create form and shape without degrading any of the colors contained in the design. Generally, the technique is achieved by dipping a solid glass object into a layer of molten glass.
