Aesthetic Movement Circa 1875 Large Gorham Sterling Silver Chatelaine Card Case
Item Condition: Beautifully engraved, great condition for 130+ years old.…
Offered for your consideration is a beautiful, hallmarked, Gorham "sterling" silver card case engraved with 2 brightcut floral illustrations, one on each side of the case. The Gorham hallmark along with "Sterling" is embossed on one side of the closure rim. This particular Gorham mark dates this rare case to the last quarter of the nineteenth century, when the Aesthetic Movement was all the rage. On the other rim there is a #206 and the letter "N".
Gorham was a prominent silver maker during the Aesthetic Movement, rivaling such American silver makers as Tiffany at the end of the Victorian Era. In true Aesthetic tradition the case is monogrammed in Gothic Script with initials that appear to be "JRH". Some collectors might want to remove the initials and replace them with their own. Others might prefer to keep it in original condition.
It is a rather large case measuring 4 1/8" H X 2 1/8" W, weighing 3oz. On close examination it has a minor amount of fine scratches, tiny dings, one pressure dent. None that mar its beauty. The hinge works perfectly well and the case closes tight. Several of the photos have lighting shadows which distract from the true look of the bright silver finish.
The attached chain was also typically Victorian. It was designed so that these calling cases could be secured to a ladies waist by a chatelaine clip. Inside they carried their personal "calling cards" or visiting cards of the day. These were beautifully chromolithed illustrations in color, with floral designs that opened up to reveal the "caller's " name in carefully scripted calligraphy. They were placed upon elaborate stands in entry hallways to let those they visited know that they came calling. So special.
Truly this is a valuable treasure not to be missed: a nineteenth century invention that can be used to carry your 21st century calling cards, credit cards "mad money" or just beautifully displayed as part of your collection.
