The basketmaking process starts with hardwood maple harvested from foreststhat naturally replenishthemselves when mature trees are carefully removed.The raw wood is thenveneeredand cut into narrowwidths for weaving.
The Longaberger Basket maker first creates a sturdy bottom for the basket,and the weaverthen attaches the bottom to wooden \"form\".The weaver passes rows of wet weaving over and underthe upsplints, using a tapper and hammer to tap the weaving tightly together.
In the Longaberger tradition,each weaver proudly signs his or her initials and the date on the bottom of the basket.
