Here is a genuine museum-grade fossil dinosaur Oviraptor egg, I believe from the Gobi Desert of Mongolia. Please see pictures!
Oviraptor eggs are far rarer than the herbivore Hadrosaur eggs, some speculate that they are about one hundred times rarer. Lowell Carhart wrote in 2009 \"This egg type (Oviraptor) is about a hundredth as common as Hadrosaur eggs, partly because ecosystems can support fewer predators like Oviraptors versus the more numerous herbivore Hadrosaurs, and partly because of different nest construction between the two that favored better preservation of Hadrosaur eggs.\"
This is likely from the Djadokhta Formation of Ukhaa Tolgod, in the Gobi Desert of what is now Mongolia. This egg has not been prepped. Prepared eggs have a charcoal-gray color and a slight gloss shine.
Size: The average Citipati oviraptor egg is about 5.5\" to 6.5\" in length. This one is about 6.7\", or a large egg. It weighs 2 lbs. 5 oz. (1046 grams), which is quite large for a Citipati Oviraptor fossil egg.
Shape: All genuine eggs have some distortion due to the compression of covering rock. The distortion on this is minimal. There is some compression on the egg, caused by millions of years of dirt and rock on top.
Shell coverage: Estimated to be about 25% covered by shell. Estimate about 85% covered on the sides with shell fragments, and about 15% on the front and back. Calcite lines throughout the egg show the shapes of the egg fragments that used to be attached.
Shell Texture: the degree of desirable \"ridge and pebble\" texture of the shell. This can be lost if the egg is prepared incorrectly. The texture of the extant shell is outstanding.
Damage: no damage or repairs visible
Coloration: Colors of the egg, contrasts, qualitative \"eye-appeal\": excellent, museum grade.
This is from an old find collection.
