Large Old Lidded Knob-top Hooper Bay Indian Eskimo Basket From Alaska For Sale
Up for sale is a lovely and well crafted large old basket from the Hooper Bay region of Alaska. The Yup'ik Eskimo weavers of that region are renowned for their finely crafted weaving, and this one was made entirely of coiled grasses. It is an older basket, well on its way to being a true antique of over 100 years old. The weaver decorated the basket with a series of multicolored crosses which repeat around the perimeter and also on the lid. The basket features a deep round - almost globular - shape, with a rounded lid with a large knob finial. In the best tradition of Yup'ik weaving, the lid has an inner lip so that it fits snugly to the body of the basket. This is a nice and finely woven Native Alaskan basket which makes a very attractive piece for display.
The basket, as noted, is a nice large size, measuring a full 8" across at the widest point on the rounded sides, and 10" inches tall to the top of the knob top finial. The basket is in really outstanding condition for its age. If you look carefully on the underside, you can see several missing wraps on the base, as well as a small number "2" in black ink. There are also a couple of random missing wraps on the sides, but this these flaws are very minor and don't interfere with the basket's awesome display quality. There are no other breaks, separated coils, or any other damage whatever. The shape is nicely symmetrical, and the knob is firm and doesn't wobble. See photos, as they give a true picture of the basket's features and condition. This is a lovely example of innovative Yup'ik weaving and will make a beautiful addition to someone's collection of Native Alaskan baskets.
